Scillonian Bee Project
The Scillonian Bee Project brings together beekeepers, researchers and local communities to protect the distinctive honey bees of the Isles of Scilly. Working in partnership with B4, the community-led project aims to conserve the native dark honey bee and support colonies that are healthy, resilient and well adapted to the unique island environment.
Through genetic research, colony monitoring and collaboration with local beekeepers, the project is building a better understanding of the honey bee population across the Isles of Scilly and how bees move and breed between the islands.
It also works with schools and community groups to improve habitats and protect island pollinators through effective biosecurity, reducing the risks associated with imported bees, pests and diseases.
By combining scientific research with local knowledge, the Scillonian Bee Project is helping to secure a sustainable future for the islands’ bees and the wider ecosystem that depends upon them.
